As you saw this weekend, the infamous Montego left this weekend. There’s an empty spot in my heart....and my garage.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

So I may be road tripping to see 1 or 2 of these 3 Capri’s for sale that I’m really into and I think the cheap Maroon/Black Stripe one is at the top of the list. Gives me a lot of money left over to modify.

The Black 82 is most ready to go racing, but the 83 is definitely the most in budget. The 84 has the big drop down front bumper which I KNOW is going to get damaged Rallying. And the Bubble Back’s have a much better chance of fitting a full set of tires in the back.

Has a cage, has a 5-speed, all for $700. Does nee a little work though...

have them haul it to RI and I can store it in my yard until you’re ready to pick it up.

I was only half kidding. I was actually going to go look at that thing for a project car until I discovered my bathroom floor was rotted and I had to do this instead.

The one with the bumper that’ll be ripped off?

Ouch, but yeah I need something more “ready to drive in RallyX” than that, despite it’s hilarity.

82 or 83. I’m partial to non bubble back’s but given the 82 is almost twice as much as the 83 kinda comes down to budget stuff like you said.

Yeah.

Just take the bumper off on race day before you leave the house

The bubble back is actually going to be put to use for more storage space for extra wheels/tires.

Part of the deal with this car is I’ll need to load another full set of 4 wheels/tires to swap at the Rally course. This won’t be living on a trailer.

Fair point. lol I’ve seen people remove them at races. Even saw a rear bumper removed because it kept reaching out grabbing cones at the exit of turns (excessively long Subaru wagon)

Ohh, didn’t think of that, good point. You could probably make it happen with a normal hatch too, just might be a little tight. You going to leave the full interior in?

I hope to, I believe the seats fold in the back for a flat load floor. We’ll see how serious I get about taking weight out of the car before I make that commitment though lol

My dad briefly had a Fox Notch a few years ago but all we used it for was to rob the drive-train out of it so I don’t think I ever bothered looking inside lol. You could probably get away with just the backseat coming out and have more than enough room.

Be mindful of the fact that you’ll change classes if you strip the interior.

As much as I love T-tops, they might not be the best for rallycross.

Kinja'd!!!0

It’s going to change classes because of the frame stiffening parts that need to go on it anyhow. I’ll be in MR right away, no avoiding it. I won’t rally a fox body without a strut tower brace and frame ties. It’ll probably wreck the frame the first time out if I don’t. I also plan to upgrade the control arms. This is why I’m leaning towards the 1800 one so I have room in the budget for the above mentioned parts and wheels/tires.

Well in that case, gut away!

Your race car is going to be a lot more fun than my race car :)

Probably not, but only the most expensive one on the list doesn’t have them and to my knowledge they aren’t illegal.

Kinja'd!!! shop-teacher > MontegoMan562 is a Capri RS Owner

Kinja'd!!!0

No, I was just thinking for the stiffness of the body. If you’re going to be bracing it anyways, I doubt it matters much. Might as well take them off and save some weight, as long as you have a full face helmet.

Kinja'd!!! MontegoMan562 is a Capri RS Owner > shop-teacher
10/25/2016 at 09:32

Kinja'd!!!0

Ha! I wonder if they’ll allow that....Save some good weight that way too!

Yeah I’m looking up every possible way to stiffen the body on it. I’m hesitant on the REAR shock tower brace only because it may effect tire storage in the cargo area lol

Hahahaha, it’s all about different experiences though.

If the Capri’s aren’t in good shape I’ve considered going Mustang....and I’ve also considered going Escort/EXP/LN7 or even Probe GT. All about whether you want to be the fastest or have the most fun lol

Kinja'd!!! shop-teacher > MontegoMan562 is a Capri RS Owner
10/25/2016 at 11:16

Kinja'd!!!0

I think they would allow it. The only stipulation in the group I ran with, was you had to have a full face helmet if you were in the open. For those of us with an open-faced helmet, they made us put our windows up, except for about a 1" opening.

You could always to a trailer-hitch platform for storing tires, or go full rally and get/build a roof-rack.

I wanted RWD, even though it’s slower, but I couldn’t pass up a $140 car!

Kinja'd!!!0

Hard to turn down that kind of a deal.

I’m just making it all stay under the budget that I sold the Montego for.

And the one capri is listed at 1800, i intend to negotiate even more mod moneys

10/25/2016 at 12:07

Kinja'd!!!0

Hahaha true, though a roof rack would be hard on a T-Top car lol. Small trailer might be fun. And actually a trailer hitch would only FURTHER stiffen the frame...

The rules have no complaints about T-Top’s as long as the factory panels are in place (and stable) for the race. I double checked!

Kinja'd!!! shop-teacher > MontegoMan562 is a Capri RS Owner

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah, I could not resist. It will also be fun to have zero cares about a car. If it gets smashed, don’t care. If the motor blows up, don’t care. If the front sub frame breaks in half (a legit possibility, the lower front a-arm mounts are quite rusty), don’t care.

The cheaper one seems to be the way to go to me, as long as you don’t find any giant problems with it. I look forward to seeing what you get!

Oh yeah, small trailer is the right option. I’ve seen some pretty slick setups at autoXs with one of those cheapy harbor freight trailers that have a big plastic toolbox on the front and tires on the back, prefect cause you dont’ have to pack and unpack your crap between events!

Or load crazy muddy tires into the back of your car lol. Bonus points to my dad being a draw-tite dealer. I’m sure he’ll have a trailer hitch solution for me.

Most importantly get them to help you install it, trying to lay under a car and push a drill up to drill big holes in the metal frame rails of a car is not an easy task!
